WORKSHOP FOR CANCER CONTROL & PREVENTION UNIT

16th December 2010
Report by Ryhana Raheem

The Cancer Control and Prevention Unit (CCPU), a Unit attached to the Ministry of Health which deals with awareness of, and prevention of cancer in Sri Lanka requested Mithuruwela to conduct a workshop on ‘Befriending’. The CCPU intends supporting cancer patients with befriending and counseling and has drawn up a plan to establish an island-wide network for such activities.

The Workshop was conducted by Nalini Ellawala of Mel Medura and Jameela Uduman who represented Mithuruwela. Nalini defined the characteristics required of a Befriender and Jameela presented first-hand accounts of cases to provide examples of the types of encounters Befrienders at CCPU would have to deal with.
The Workshop was very well received by the participants- 5 doctors and 3 nurses attached to the CCPU.

Dr Suraj Perera who coordinated the Workshop on behalf of the CCPU has thanked Mithuruwela and expressed the hope that Mithuruwela would continue to work with and assist the CCPU in this regard.
We for our part look forward to assisting the CCPU- and establishing Mithuruwela in new areas.
